Colleagues say Adelaide exchange student Sunnie Nguyen’s disappearance out of character

Work colleagues of a Vietnamese exchange student who has been reported missing in Adelaide are concerned for her welfare and say her disappearance is out of character.

Sunnie Nguyen’s host family said they last saw her on Monday evening and reported her missing to police on Tuesday.

They said 17-year-old Nguyen has not responded to their text messages and her social media accounts have been deleted.

South Australia Police (SAPOL) said it’s investigating the whereabouts of four Vietnamese teenagers who were reported missing between December 2023 and January 2024.

They believe the students may have gone interstate, and do not believe they are in immediate danger.

“SA Police are working with interstate policing counterparts to help locate these youths,” SAPOL said.

“There is nothing currently identified in any investigation that would indicate these youths are in immediate danger.”

Nguyen had been living in Adelaide for six months before her disappearance and attended Hamilton Secondary College.

Her homestay family have told police she seemed happy living in Adelaide and there was no obvious reason for her to leave.

Nguyen’s visa remains active for another three years.

Her employer at Mi and Co The Nail and Beauty Bar in St Peter’s, Mi Tran, said the 17-year-old did not show up for her shift on Wednesday.

She described Nguyen as a reliable employee who would always give her notice if she couldn’t work.

“I’m very fortunate to have her in my team … she would be the type that would let me know if she were late for work, even five or 10 minutes (late),” Tran said.

“We are all very worried because she is the little sister of the group … we couldn’t sleep properly.”

Host mother May Zervaas said she was concerned for Nguyen because English was the 17-year-old’s second language.

Nguyen’s colleagues said they have been messaging her, but have received no response.
