Search narrows for New Zealand father Tom Phillips and his three children ‘in hiding’ for years

Search narrows for New Zealand father Tom Phillips and his three children ‘in hiding’ for years

The search has narrowed for a New Zealand father and his three children who disappeared years ago. Their mother and siblings believe they may be living “off the grid”.

Tom Phillips, 36, has been known to disappear, and is now believed to be hiding with Jayda, 10, Maverick, eight, and Ember, seven, in Western Waikato, a region in the upper North Island with extensive forests, wetlands, and mountain ranges.

The Marokopa and surrounding areas, where investigators are now narrowing their search, is not easy for them to navigate.

“Although the environment is challenging for investigators, we continue to devote resources to this operation and follow up on all reported sightings,” NZ Police said on Tuesday.

The children disappeared in December 2021, from a farm belonging to Phillips’ parents, but it’s not the first time they have vanished.

The three children and their father were officially reported missing by family members three months earlier, in September 2021, when Phillips’ abandoned car was found with waves crashing against it at Kiritehere Beach.

It triggered a multi-agency search through dense bushland and rugged coastline, which was suspended after 12 days.

After what the family called “17 days of hell”, Phillips and the kids reappeared safely at the family farm, with the dad telling police they had been camping in dense bushland.

He was charged with wasteful deployment of police personnel and resources, but he and the kids vanished again in December 2021, a month before his scheduled court date.

Phillips has since been spotted several times, including once in February 2022, when NZ Police said: “Tom returned to a family member’s home in the middle of the night to take supplies.”

Another time, in August 2023, he was spotted at a Bunnings in Te Rapa, where police believe he was picking up more supplies.

Two possible sightings have even been linked to alleged crimes — the robbery of a bank at Te Kuiti in May 2023, and the attempted burglary of the convenience store Piopio Suprette.

“While we cannot comment on … rumours around the Te Kuiti bank robbery and who the possible accomplice could be, we have previously confirmed that Phillips is the suspect of the attempted burglary of the Piopio superette store,” NZ Police said on Tuesday.

“Tom Phillips faces charges in relation to aggravated robbery, aggravated wounding, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

“Police consider him to be armed, and he should not be approached.

Family worry about isolated lives of children

The wider family and NZ Police are desperate to confirm the welfare of the children, who have not been seen in years.

Police warn that available images of the children may no longer look like them.

“They will be taller; they will have either lost baby teeth or started to get their adult teeth, and will likely be wearing their hair in different styles. They could also be using different names,” NZ Police commander inspector Will Loughrin said last year.

“I want to acknowledge both the children’s mother, and Tom’s wider family, who continue to be living with extreme stress and anxiety.”

The mother and siblings of the children, who wish to remain anonymous, have released several statements during the time the children have been missing, sharing birthday wishes for the kids, along with accusations that someone has been helping Phillips to hide them.

“Our family, like the police, believe Tom and the kids are getting help from someone which has allowed them to stay off the grid for the past six months,” the mother of the children previously said.

“People will understand our wider family situation is complex, but putting that aside, our focus is solely on the children and putting their wellbeing first.

“With each birthday and holiday, I hope Tom has realised the children need so much more in life than the isolated one he is providing,” the sister said.
